Stephen Alan Hoyle

Stephen Alan Hoyle, 65, of Henderson, North Carolina, passed away on November 19, 2024, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. Born on October 12, 1959, in Henderson, he was the son of Hugh and Margie (Peoples) Hoyle. Steve was known for his sharp wit, charismatic personality, and ability to tell unforgettable stories. He could make anyone laugh, never met a stranger, and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Steve loved life and lived it to the fullest. From a young age, he aspired to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a truck driver. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1978 and was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas. During his service, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Expert Rifle Badge, and the Expert Hand Grenade Badge. Steve completed his tour of duty in February 1981 and returned home to Henderson. His love for trucking led him to run his own trucking business for several years, an achievement he was deeply proud of. When health challenges arose, he transitioned to driving dump trucks. Trucking took Steve on countless adventures, allowing him to see places he might never have experienced otherwise. He recorded these memories with photographs from his journeys. Steve cherished time spent with family and friends, often entertaining with his larger-than-life personality. He adored his dogs, especially Sassy Ann, his loyal companion for many years. A lover of the beach, racing, and creating lasting memories with his daughter, Steve’s life was a true adventure. Known affectionately as "Red Dog," Steve had a big heart and a willingness to help anyone in need. His stubborn determination and strong will defined him. He is survived by his cherished friend and companion, Dana Hoyle, his daughter, Ashley Brooke Hoyle; his brother, Randy Hoyle, and wife, Deborah; and his sister, Ellen Moody, and husband, Steve. He also leaves behind his niece and nephews: Cathy White and husband, Matt; David Moody and wife, Michelle; and Clay Hoyle and wife, Shannon. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details forthcoming. As we mourn Steve's passing, we take comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering. "Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean."
