Martin Thomas Lowy

Doctor Martin Thomas Lowy passed away suddenly on March 1, 2025. He was born to the late Dr. Howard and Phyllis Lowy of East Peoria, Illinois on September 29th, 1954. He graduated from Spalding High School in Peoria in 1972. He continued his studies at Marquette University for his undergraduate degree and completed his PhD degree at Purdue University in Pharmacology/Toxicology in 1982. He completed a 3 year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago Pritzker Medical School from 1982-1985. His long career began in academia at Case Western Reserve University and later many years in drug development at GSK. His work with GSK saw him travel abroad with many trips to Italy and the United Kingdom. The area of neuroscience was always his career focus and passion. In his retirement, he was involved as a consultant for a startup and enjoyed staying active in that project. Marty loved neuroscience, classic rock, the outdoors, his Fox News cable shows and his beloved Purdue Boilermaker basketball program. He also appreciated a great BOGO coupon deal. Everyone that knew him knew he loved bargains. He loved keeping up with current scientific literature and reading books about science and medical topics. At the time of his passing his current favorite was Dr. Marty Makary's book "Blind Spots". He also really enjoyed all the Jonathon Kellerman books for some lighter reading. Marty really loved his family and was especially proud of both of his children, Jordan and Caitlin. He was also a doting dog Dad to the family Maltipoo and was an easy mark for treats. Marty liked traveling with his wife Dana and Hilton Head, Marco Island and Aruba were places he loved to return to. In their younger years, Marty and Dana were avid campers. Some of their favorite memories from those years are from camping in Raccoon Lake in Indiana. His love for being anywhere by the water began at a young age with family summer vacations to WA-GA-THA-KA on Wabana Lake in Minnesota. Those trips were very special and left life long memories. He was also discovering the world of Airbnb stays thanks to his children and their spouses. Marty also loved his long late Sunday night chats with his older brother Jim. Marty will be remembered for his silly irreverent sense of humor that could often find the funny moments in any situation. He loved attending a good comedy show. He will dearly be missed by all of us and always remembered. He is survived by his wife Dana who he met in a pharmacology lab at Purdue. His children Jordan (Ocean) Lowy and Caitlin (Kyle) Martin both of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his brother Jim (Janet) Lowy of Penngrove, CA, brother Dave (Sharon) Lowy of Clinton, IA and Judy (Ed deceased) Prechel of Pekin, IL. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Corey Musselman for the past 30 years of wonderful care for Marty as his primary care doctor. Marty held Dr. Musselman in the highest esteem. The family would also like to thank Jennifer Taylor, PA in assisting with Marty’s care over the years. Marty will be cremated. There will be no funeral service per his wishes. There will be a private cremation inurnment niche committal service for family at Wake Memorial Park in Cary, NC at a later date. Rest easy Marty. We love you so and will carry your memory with us.
