Shirley Ann Ament Fasolt
March 22, 1932 - December 22, 2021
Shirley Ann Ament Fasolt passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021 at the age of 89 having just celebrated 69 years of marriage to Dean Fasolt. She was born on March 22, 1932 at her parents’ home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and always spoke of wonderful memories growing up there. She was especially proud of being an alumna of the Class of ’49 from McCaskey High School as well as a graduate of the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Shirley was a lifelong nurse whose career spanned many years including being a Visiting Nurse (the start of home health nursing in the 1950’s), a surgical scrub nurse, Charge nurse of a college infirmary, OB Advice nurse, Home Health nurse and several hospital supervisory positions. Even after her retirement, she was always able and willing to give advice and care whenever needed. Her caring and compassionate nature helped her excel as a nurse, wife, and mother. She was a working mom and homemaker balancing both with ease. She found time to prepare meals each evening and bake everything from scratch including dozens of Christmas cookies each year. She always made birthdays and holidays special and memorable for her family. As the family moved during the course of Dean’s career, Shirley made each new house into a home. She made many friends along the way. Their move to North Carolina in 1971 was a big adjustment but proved to be the best move of them all. Shirley became a big N.C. State fan - following college sports for the first time in her life. Shirley loved to travel and she and Dean enjoyed 12 trips to her beloved British Isles. They also enjoyed several cruises, the most exciting being an Atlantic Ocean crossing aboard the Queen Elizabeth II. She also enjoyed the beach making family trips there fun and memorable. Shirley’s other love was music ranging from Classical to Big Band. She adored the Beatles and felt life was complete after she saw Paul McCartney in concert. The radio was always playing in her kitchen and records were always the best gifts from her. Above all, Shirley loved her family. Her husband Dean was the love of her life with whom she shared many of life’s ups and downs. Shirley is also survived by her son Tim and his wife Sheila and her daughter Linda and her husband Mark. In addition Shirley was blessed with three grandchildren, Melissa, Sarah, and Wes as well as four great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sadie, Ethan, and Evelyn. Shirley is also survived by her special nephew and nieces, David, Jenny, Carrie, and Rebecca as well as her sister-in-law Sidney and husband Vince. Memorials are not necessary, but if you choose to donate in Shirley’s memory, the SPCA of Wake County would be a choice. Shirley had a lifelong tenderness and love of cats. Even though she had not had one in years, she always adored her family’s kitties. Another choice would be Transitions Lifecare (Raleigh, NC). Her Hospice care team was a Godsend for the care and wellbeing of both her and Dean during these last few months. The family greatly appreciates their kindness and skill both at home and at the Hospice House.
