December 20, 1923 - June 12, 2019
Mrs. Mary Marie Daughtry (ne`e La Rose) was born December 20th in New York during the beginnings of the Harlem Renaissance 1923. Margaret and Phillipe La Rose’s only daughter; affectionately known as “Sissy” to elder brothers, John, Marcel, and Romanel (who regrettably passed as an infant), and youngest brother Louie, whom she called “Peggy” due to his luxurious black curly hair. Mom graduated from Wadley High School in New York City and went to work at the world-famous Macy’s at Herald Square. A smart, proud and fun-loving young lady, she met, fell in love and married McKinley (Mac) Daughtry, a native of Portsmouth VA. She bore 5 very animated and lively children: Alicia, the cutest baby girl, Romanel called Roey, our ebullient baby boy, the energetic twins, McKinley aka Rashyid and Camille, and her Number 1 son, Rene Chavez. Among us siblings are 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, who experienced her light, laugh and joie de vivre. Mom was well beloved by her many friends, neighbors and the many she nurtured and took under her wing in Harlem, the South Bronx and here in Carrboro, North Carolina. She worked very hard to provide for us during the years, but her best and highest achievements was her growth from Kitchen Aide – to Assistant Cook – then to Head Cook and Dietician at the Frank D. Whalen Daycare Center in the Bronx, New York. For over 20 years she cooked, fed and nurtured all the pre-schoolers, faculty and neighbors who came through the door (or up to the window) and needed a satisfying meal, a sweet desert, but most of all a sympathetic ear. Her quick wit, joyfulness, laughter but most of all her strength, sympathetic, and nurturing nature will be sorely missed. But Mommy your brilliance lives on in us your loving family.
