James Edward (Jim) Smith, 78, of Cary died on Monday, January 21, 2019 at UNC Hospitals. Jim was born in Quincy, MA, eventually settling on Long Island, until moving to Cary in 2017. Jim proudly served his country in the US Navy, assigned to an air anti-submarine squadron aboard the aircraft carrier USS Randolph. A graduate of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Clark University, Jim had a long and varied career in pharmaceutical research, development and technology, spending most of his professional life with DuPont Pharmaceuticals. Jim is survived by his wife Diana; his daughters Kimberly Vita of Lloyd Harbor, NY and Kelly Neri of Cary; his brother David of Cape Cod, MA; grandchildren Shane Flanagan and Sydney, Taralyn and Griffin Neri. He was predeceased by his brother Thomas. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 25, 2019 from Noon-1:00 PM at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Rd, Cary, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM . Entombment with military honors will follow at Wake Memorial Park Mausoleum, 7002 Green Hope School Rd., Cary. In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring Jim may be made to St. Jude Research Hospital www.stjude.org or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society www.lls.org/north-carolina
