Hattie Ann France passed away Dec. 7, 2021 in Cary, N.C. Hattie, who preferred to be called Ann, was the daughter of Thomas and Elva Schmoll of Hartley, Iowa. She was born on the farm on Nov. 13, 1926. She has an older sister, Lois Douglass of Mt. Dora, Fla., a younger brother, Mauri Schmoll of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and a younger sister, Melva Storm of Aurora, Colo. Ann has 3 daughters: Lynda Tate of Cary, N.C.; Cheryl Ritchie, (husband, Jim) of Naples, Fla.; and Carole Sloan, (husband, John) of Granville, Ohio. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Ann graduated from Iowa State Teachers’ College. She married Richard France in 1950. Richard passed away in 2014. Ann cherished her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and wanted to hear stories about them all the time. Ann was a homemaker until her children entered high school. At this time, she briefly returned to teaching. Office work at the Draft Board in Decatur, Ga., and at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va., brought her the most joy. Ann also loved doing needlework and made a number of beautiful quilts. She also enjoyed playing bridge and doing puzzles.
