Anne was born in Oriental, NC in 1923; grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Pamlico County, NC. She attended Women’s College of Greensboro (now UNCG) and Wagner School of Nursing in New York, receiving her Register Nurse credentials in 1946. During her career, she worked at Craven County Hospital in New Bern as an operating nurse and late as a Craven County Health Department nurse. She traveled extensively as an army wife with her first husband, Major Joseph Graham Stevenson; serving in Germany, Thailand and Korea before his death in 1962. Anne married Thomas W. She was active in the community, helped wit the family business W J Smith and Sons, faithfully attending oriental First Baptist Church, where she loved sending cards and baking for the sick and homebound. She is predeceased by her husbands and her sister Georgie Hughes of Fuquay Varina, NC. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and Mike Beagle of Durant, Oklahoma, Joanne and Eddie Medlin of Apex, NC Mary and Bill Mills of Cary, NC; daughter-in-law Joanne Smith of Arapahoe, NC, a loving caregiver; four grandchildren Chris Sanders, Chad Hunning, Jason Hunning and Katie Almaguer; and five great grandchildren, Avery, Luke, Layla, Carter and Grant, who lovingly called her “ol ma”. A private family graveside service will be held. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to Oriental First Baptist Church or Transitions Life Care of Wake County.
