Mark Allen Nicopolis

Our beloved Mark Allen Nicopolis - dedicated husband, father, and friend - passed away surrounded by loved ones on December 31, 2022 at the age of 60 at home in New Hill, North Carolina. He is survived and missed by his devoted wife of 31 years, Elizabeth; loving daughter Margaret; his loyal Jack Russel, Ollie; his parents, Joseph and Virglee Nicopolis; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Robin Nicopolis; and dearest friends and chosen family, Kenny and Cindy Noble. Mark was born in Warren, Ohio and grew up in an Italian neighborhood before moving to the rural town of Kinsman, Ohio at age 15. After graduating from Joseph Badger High School in 1981, Mark enlisted in the United States Airforce, serving for 4 years before returning home to Ohio. There he met his wife, Elizabeth and within a couple years became a father - which was one of his greatest joys in life. Mark and his family then moved to North Carolina for a fresh start. Over the years he trained as a trim carpenter, and started his own business - eventually expanding to become a master of his trade. He worked as a superintendent for some time before the economic changes of 2008, after which he began a new business in remodeling. Anyone who knew Mark on a professional level would speak to his craftsmanship, perfectionism, skill, and patience. Every project he touched had to be done ‘the right way’, not the easy way. He had many wonderful clients who, over the years, became more like friends as he helped them repair and remodel their homes. He would take pride in the fact that his memory will live on in each and every one of those projects and the happiness they brought. Mark and his family lived most of their years in an eclectic log cabin in the country and hosted many parties for family and friends. He was known for being a generous host, wonderful cook, a grill master, a smoked meat enthusiast, and for his great sense of humor. Anyone was welcome around his bonfire and at his table, and anyone who was lucky enough to experience one of these events would agree. He was also a Rock n Roll enthusiast, who attended countless concerts and happily spent much of his free time playing the guitar and piano and singing with his daughter. Mark Nicopolis was one of a kind: A lifelong learner, an adventurer, a rebel, a patriot, a visionary, an entrepreneur, an artisan, a musician, a philosopher, a nurturer. He was an outstanding father, a steadfast husband, and a fierce friend. His legacy is one of comfort, optimism, and laughter - a legacy that we hope will carry on in all who knew him in their actions, thoughts, and stories. Mark's wife and daughter wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible group of family, friends, and community that came together for them during Mark's illness - as well as the fantastic folks at the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Liberty Hospice, and the VA who were with us every step of the way. And last, a special thank you to Kenny and Cindy Noble for standing loyally by us until the very end. Mark was preceded in death by his sister Lynn Nicopolis; grandparents George and Margaret Nicopolis & Ben and Georgia Rigel. Rather than a traditional funeral service, Mark has requested that his family hold a 'Celebration of Life' for him in the future - details to be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers or gifts we ask that you donate to the Paralyzed Veterans of America or the ALS Foundation.
